The Cardinals are in Jupiter, Florida for spring training. Our own Brian Feldman is in the middle of all the action. Brian will provide constant updates, so check back through the day for the very latest news.
Mar. 1, 1:33 p.m.-Boggs has "lower back strain". He won't be available for a while. Working with trainers now.
Mar. 1, 1:31 p.m.-Mitchell Boggs also was hurt. Waiting for an update on him.
Mar. 1, 1:30 p.m.-Carpenter strained his left hamstring. Doesn't think its too serious. He felt a twinge on a pitch and couldn't throw anymore. Will be reevaluated tomorrow. Trainers aren't too concerned about it.
Mar. 1, 12:55 p.m.- Carpenter walking off field with, I believe, the trainer. Again...maybe nothing and simply a precaution. Or.....
Mar. 1, 12:49 p.m. -Carpenter coming out of game mid-inning. That's not normal. Especially when someone comes out to look at him. Wow. Just pray nothing is wrong. Didn't seem very serious though. Probably just precautionary.
Mar. 1, 12:36 p.m. - Skip a very busy man at 2nd base. That's gotta be his 3rd or 4th grounder fielded.
Mr. 1, 12:28p.m. -Welcome to the HR party, Allen Craig. He crushes one to left-center for a 2-run shot. Love his bat. He'll start everyday at some point. Just a matter of when (what year) and where (what position).
Mar. 1, 12:20 p.m. -Memo to other pitchers. Chris Carpenter works fast. Very fast. Doesn't put you to sleep. Please follow suit.
Mar. 1, 12:16 p.m. -Matt Holliday just annihilates a pitch for a 2-run HR to left. No doubt about that one. Barely got off the ground...just a smoked line drive. That's his strength.
Mar. 1, 12:09 p.m. -First pitch swinging...Schumaker flies out to left. Patience is the one thing I wish Skip had more of as a lead off hitter.
Mar. 1, 12:05 p.m. -It was Red Schoendienst yesterday...Mike Matheny today who turns in the lineup card and goes out for the ground rules.
Mar. 1, 12:04 p.m. -Shelby Miller and Ryan Franklin sharing a laugh pregame. Wonder if Franklin is old enough to be Shelby's father? Or maybe just a much much older brother. Either way quite funny to see how different they are in age.
Mar. 1, 9:43 a.m. - Descalso getting a look at 3rd for insurance sake. Tony admits he doesn't have the bat to play there. More of a middle infield bat. And not really a SS. That means he's a 2nd baseman who can fill in at other places in a pinch.
Mar. 1, 9:41 a.m. - Tony not ready to say who will start Saturday. That's the next Wainwright spot to fill. Could be Valdes again...or someone else. The smart money is on someone else.
Mar. 1, 9:39 a.m. - Albert gets today off...plays Wednesday and Thursday...then gets Friday off (avoiding traveling to Kissimmee). That's no accident.
Mar. 1, 9:38 a.m. - Berkman is going to DH the next few days while they have that option. No need to put unnecessary stress on the arm. He'll go back to the OF a little later. Tony doesn't believe it's a huge problem...yet.
Mar. 1, 9:36 a.m. - Tony announces they will play a "B" game vs. the Braves in Disney on the 9th. Atlanta asked for it, and the Cards have enough guys to cover. Could be a chance for some mini-camp guys (top prospects) to get playing time.
Mar. 1, 9:34 a.m. - Tony also says Matt Carpenter is another guy who has made a nice impression. Claims he will be a big leaguer eventually. Hard to see where though. Freese and Cox also play his position.
Mar. 1, 9:33 a.m. - Just a note on Chambers. Certainly not a candidate to make the team out of spring. However if he plays well in AAA this season and a need omes up he COULD be a possibility to be brought up.
Mar. 1, 9:31 a.m. - Ok...notes from Tony's pregame chat. Really loves Adron Chambers. Excellent athlete, good arm, really good head on his shoulders. Says its been fun to be able to get to see him for the first time. Compared the situation to seeing Ryan Ludwick for the first time when he made an impression.
Mar. 1, 7:46 a.m. - Lineup: Schumaker 4...Theriot 6...Rasmus 8...Holliday 7...Berkman DH...Descalso 5...Molina 2...Craig 3...Jay 9. Carpenter pitching with Boggs, Tallet, Reifer and Thomas listed as available.
