(KMOV) – Long-time educational leader in the St. Louis area, Cleveland Hammonds, passed away on Tuesday.
Dr. Hammonds served as superintendent of the St. Louis Publics Schools from 1996 to 2003.
Officials at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, Illinois, confirm that Hammonds died of a heart attack Tuesday evening after collapsing while teaching at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.
Dr. Hammonds has been teaching educational leadership at the university.
He is survived by his wife, Yvonne.
