(KMOV) -- A cross that students of Alton High School built to remember a classmate who died last week is being removed.
The students built the cross after their 17-year-old classmate died in a car crash outside the school last week.
Students say administrators originally gave them permission to display the cross, but have since told them to remove it.
School officials say that students were allowed to keep the cross up for a week, but are now concerned it will fall and damage vehicles.
The district is now working with students to conduct a seat belt drive to honor the teenage crash victim.
