72-Year-old jogger struck, killed during morning rush

(KMOV) -- One person is dead after being struck by a car around 6:30 Thursday morning in Manchester.

Manchester police tell News 4, 72-year old Virgilio Sy was out jogging in the area.

He was struck while trying to cross Big Bend Road.

Big Bend Road was closed in both directions where the accident happened at Arbor Pointe Drive and reopened to traffic around 10am.

The vehicle involved was a grey Nissan Altima coupe. Police tell News 4 that the driver of the Nissan was not injured in the crash.

The speed limit in that area is 40 mph. Police believe that the driver was driving between 40 and 45 mph at the time of the crash.

Sergeant Gerard Johnson says it's possible the crest in the road and the rising sun played a role in the driver not seeing the jogger in time to stop.

Police say criminal charges are not expected in this case, but the investigation is ongoing.
