(KMOV) -- How many more games will the Cardinals have to give away before the front office takes action? This Cardinals team is about to play its way right out of the playoff picture. The Ryan Ludwick trade may be the most damaging deal the Cardinals have made since they included Dan Haren in the trade with Oakland for Mark Mulder. Without Ludwick, and the subsequent injury to David Freese, the Cardinals have one of the weaker offensive attacks in the National League. And that's with Albert Pujols having another MVP caliber season.
The Cardinals need a new 3rd baseman, and they need him now. Felipe Lopez is a nice utility player, but he's not an everyday 3rd baseman. Lopez is hitting .137 this month (as of Thursday) and continues to struggling defensively. This is the Cardinals best option at third? Hard to believe. Other teams have been able to make deals involving impact players, even after the trade deadling. The Atlanta Braves acquired Derek Lee from the Cubs yesterday for a trio of minor league pitchers. The Cardinals desperately need to swing a similar kind of trade to land a third baseman for the rest of the season. A rental player will do. Freese will be back next year. John Mozeliak has had discussions with Toronto about Edwin Encarnacion, and with Houston about Geoff Blum. Either guy would be a upgrade. Brandon Inge of Detroit might also be available. He'd be the best option. Inge is solid defensively and has hit with power in the past. Mozeliak needs to do something, and do it quickly before the Cardinals fall any farther behind the Reds.
