Costello doesn't like Ground Zero mosque plan

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) -- A Democratic congressman from southwestern Illinois doesn't think plans to build a mosque and community center near New York City's Ground Zero is a good idea.

In a statement Tuesday, Congressman Jerry Costello of Belleville says the project's supporters need to listen to the concerns of the families of those who died in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Current plans are to locate the mosque two blocks from the site.

Costello's stance departs from that of President Barack Obama, who last week declared that Muslims have the right to practice their religion and build on private property in lower Manhattan.

Obama later said that wasn't an endorsement of the specifics of the mosque plan.

The Senate's top Democrat, Majority Leader Harry Reid, now opposes the idea.
