Officer-involved shooting in south St. Louis

(KMOV)-A St. Louis police officer was involved in a shooting in south St. Louis.

This happened around 5:30 p.m. Friday in the 3,000 block of Chippewa.

Authorities said an officer pulled over the suspect to issue a citation for an open container. The suspect ran off with a gun in the waistband of his pants. The gun fell out of his waistband and landed on the ground. The suspect picked the gun off the ground and allegedly pointed the gun at the officer. The officer pulled out his weapon and fired 2 times, hitting the suspect in the thigh.

Authorities said the suspect threw his gun on the roof of his house and went inside. When backup arrived with a canine unit the dog bit the suspect after a minor scuffle.

The suspect was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The 31-year-old officer involved in the shooting was on force for 7 months.
