EDWARDSVILLE - A judge sentenced an Alton man to 44 years in prison Tuesday for the brutal murder of his disabled 2-year-old son, who lay dying while the father ordered the child's mother to go out and find illegal drugs.
Johnny Garcia, 24, was sentenced in Madison County Circuit Court, where he pleaded guilty in May to a charge of first-degree murder in the death of young Maxwell Owen Eyer.
Dr. Raj Nanduri, a pathologist, testified that Maxwell had injuries dating back for some time, but there were four fatal blows to the head. The child would have suffered involuntary muscle contractions, nausea, sleepiness and coma, she said.
