ST. LOUIS (AP) -- It's no secret that raising children can be expensive, but how about a quarter of a million dollars expensive?
A government report says a middle-income family with a child born last year will spend about $245,340 raising that child through age 17.
The report by the USDA's Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion says housing is the largest single expense, followed by food, child care and education costs. The USDA releases costs related to raising children annually and says they help courts and states determine child-support guidelines and foster care payments.
