FREEPORT, Ill. (AP) -- Authorities in Stephenson County are investigating the discovery earlier this week of a human foot in the Pecatonica River near Freeport.
Sheriff David Snyders says no body has been found near where the foot was discovered. He adds his office is treating the case as a homicide.
The foot was found while the Rock Hollow Conservation Club was holding a river cleanup day on Sunday. Snyders says a volunteer recovered a tennis shoe in a log jam and saw a human foot was inside.
According to Snyders, K-9 cadaver teams have searched the area surrounding the log jam and beyond, but that so far no other evidence has been found.
County Coroner Tom Leamon says despite a forensic examination, the age and race of the person the foot belonged to has not been determined.
