(KMOV) --A woman was attacked in St. Louis Thursday morning as she walked to the bus stop to go to work.

Officers said the suspect put gun put to her head as she walked down the street and took her purse and her phone. But they say it was the stolen goods that lead them his arrest.

Eric Strong is charged with robbery and armed criminal action after police say he approached a 19-year-old woman in the 8800 block of Broadway in North St. Louis.

Police say the woman screamed and a Good Samaritan tried to step in and help, but officers say strong also flashed the gun at the man, before taking off.

The witness tried to get a plate number, but couldn’t. So instead, police were able to track the victim’s phone.

Prosecutors say technology is becoming an increasingly helpful crime-fighting tool.

“It allowed us to locate that phone and the suspect. Sometimes we just locate the phone in this case we located the suspect as well,” said prosecutor Jennifer Szczucinski.

Prosecutors also applaud the witness for trying to step up and help, but not putting himself in harm’s way.

Bond for Strong was set at $150,000.
