HILLSBORO, Mo. (AP) -- A St. Louis-area resident has tested positive for West Nile virus, the eighth suspected human case in Missouri this year.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the new case is out of Jefferson County. Details about the person were not released. The Jefferson County Health Department announced the positive test on Wednesday.
The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services says three probable cases of West Nile virus have been reported in St. Louis County. Among the four previous confirmed cases, two were in Kansas City, one in St. Louis city and one in Ste. Genevieve County.
There have been no reported fatalities from West Nile in Missouri in 2013.
West Nile is caused by mosquito bites. Most cases occur from June through September.
