(KMOV) -- A former New Melle Police sergeant turned into a fugitive after he allegedly refused to register as a sex offender.

St. Charles County officials await the arrival of former police sergeant, Terry Calahan, 43, who is recently accused of presenting himself as a police officer and reportedly harassing young women in Missouri, specifically around the Lake of Ozarks.

Authorities with the Osage Beach Police Department were forced to issue warnings about Calahan to other departments because it became a larger problem.

On September 16, Calahan showed up to the St. Charles County Courthouse to go before a judge but he fled during a break in the court proceedings.

“He just left. He left the courthouse and we waited around for quite some time. He didn't show up and we asked for a warrant,” said Tim Lohmar, the St. Charles County Prosecutor.

In 1994, he was convicted of third-degree sexual abuse involving a 15-year-old girl.

“The offense happened decades ago and there was some question as to whether or not at the time that offense took place that that triggered a registration requirement," Lohmar said. "Our position was at this point in time it doesn't matter what the law was back then, the law now is that that sort of offense does require a registration. He disagreed hence the conflict we find ourselves in."

The Missouri Information Analysis Center put out a notice in June, warning police departments in Missouri that Calahan was still presenting himself as a police officer and using a badge from the Wellston Police Department.

He was supposed to be registering every 90 days with St. Charles County as a sex offender.

A compliance officer found Calahan was telling authorities he was employed and living in St. Charles when he was actually out of work and living near the Lake of the Ozarks area, according to police.

Calahan went on the run and his movements were traced from Texas as he made his way to California.

News 4 was told Monday, U.S. Marshals arrested Terry Calahan in Jackson, California, just southeast of Sacramento.

He is currently awaiting extradition back to Missouri.
