Tarasenko learning to play North American-style hockey

ST. LOUIS (HockeyStL) – His English may not be perfect, but Vladimir Tarasenko is starting to learn hockey in North America.

Tarasenko met most of his team on Friday at the final informal skate before training camp opened up on Sunday.  He is already impressing Ken Hitchcock.

"(Tarasenko) is asking questions and you don’t have to tell him anything twice.  He gets it,” Hitchcock said.

Tarasenko, who has been practicing on a line with Alex Steen and Andy McDonald, is starting to learn the different style of hockey that isn’t played in Europe.

“This is a big adjustment for any player coming from Europe that has not played in North America,” Hitchcock said.  “You see all of the things he had time to do in Europe, he has no time to do here.”

In Europe, hockey is played more cautiously and on a larger rink which allows players to make more plays from side-to-side.  Hitchcock said Tarasenko is starting to realize that he can’t make similar plays that he is used to and is learning a different style of hockey.

Fans will get the chance to see Tarasenko in action during the team’s first scrimmage Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
