Hitchcock: Time to get rid of too many smiles

ST. LOUIS (HockeyStL) – It was back to business for the Blues on Monday as the team prepares to start the abbreviated 48-game season Saturday night against the Red Wings.

“First half (of practice) was good, second half not so good,” Ken Hitchcock said after the hour and a half long practice.

The Blues worked mostly on special teams situations during the latter part of practice which could have been a reason for the lack of energy, according to Hitchcock.

“I thought the energy was good (Sunday).  The first half energy was good today, second half, because you go into special teams you’re kind of trying to make plays rather than focus on execution, and I thought that we let our foot off the gas,” Hitchcock added.

The intensity is expected to climb tomorrow night when the team holds its first scrimmage of training camp.  The scrimmage is free and will be held at the Scottrade Center at 7 p.m.

The scrimmage should help the coaches determine where the team stands heading into the second half of camp.

Hitchcock noted the lack of energy was “quietly addressed” at Monday’s practice.

“I think too many smiles so we’re going to have to get rid of some of the smiles,” Hitchcock said.  “We’re getting closer to the game.  We need the game faces on pretty soon.”
