ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- The St. Louis Zoo is preparing to renovate the former Forest Park Hospital, but first wanted to give a local non-profit access to materials left inside.

On Saturday, the St. Louis HELP organization packed up all the hospital's leftover medical equipment to reuse.

Laura Cannon, executive director, said the non-profit she started in her garage now collects and recycles nearly 8500 items.

"We have something called trash day," Cannon said. "Put literally anything on the curb, and seeing hospital beds and commodes, wondering, 'Why not put it back in the community?'"

The organization gives medical equipment to those in need free of cost, as long as they promise to give it back when they are done using i.

Meanwhile, zoo officials say construction will begin at the old Forest Park Hospital as early as 2013.
