ST. LOUIS -- Plans to turn the Powell Square building in St. Louis into an arts center have been scrapped, and the 97-year-old structure is coming down.

Demolition is under way on the building that sits on the southern edge of downtown. Owner Stephen Murphy had discussed turning the building into 122,000 square feet of studios, galleries and retail space.

The project never got off the ground. Jeff Rainford, Mayor Francis Slay’s chief of staff, says the city felt compelled to take down what he called “the most visible eyesore” in St. Louis.

Powell Square opened in 1916 as a chemical factory. The city condemned it and is paying a wrecking company $265,000 for the demolition.
