Wentzville, St. Charles County leaders call for aid from MoDOT

WENTZVILLE, Mo (KMOV.com) -- A deadly stretch of highway in Wentzville is once again getting the attention of local leaders.

Highway 61 north of Interstate 70 has been a target of safety concerns for months. Officials have made the area a ‘travel safe zone’ and, after demands from the city, MoDOT implemented higher fines for violations and more patrols in the area.

The City of Wentzville has committed more than $1 million for improvements, and now St. Charles County has committed $2.5 million dollars toward a potential project to reconstruct some crucial intersections.

Despite the commitment, city and county leaders tell News 4they still need MoDOT to make progress happen.

“I think MoDOT is hestitant to say ‘yes we’re going to get this done’ because their funding is dribbling into them,” said St. Charles County Councilman Joe Cronin. “But I feel confident that with the city of Wentzville and the St. Charles County government, and some backing from MoDOT that that interchange is gonna happen.”

MoDOT engineers say so far they can’t commit a dollar figure. According to MoDOT officials, a combination of city and county funds already set aside should make it more likely that the project will get state funding.
