Wash. U attack prompts heightened security on campus

A Washington University student was walking home alone about 1:00 Monday morning when she says was attacked and sexually assaulted along Skinker Blvd. a few blocks north of Clayton road.   She was a couple blocks from her home.  After the attack she made it home and called police.  The attacker said he had a knife but she never saw a weapon.

Here's the suspect's description from St. Louis police---Black male, 18 to 25 years old. 5'4" to 5'5", medium build, dark complexion, wearing a dark hoodie, a grey sweatshirt, jeans and tennis shoes. Police also say he was wearing white gloves.  Obviously that's something a bit unusual.  If the "white gloves" part means anything to you and you might have an idea who it might be you're asked to call police. The Crimestoppers number is 866.371.TIPS

Also, Washington University officials have sent out mass emails to students, faculty and staff warning of the attack and telling them to take precautions.  The school is also expanding its night-time shuttle service.  It's called "Campus 2 Home."  Riders will be taken directly to their front door.

In the past, the shuttle service only went to the neighborhoods north of campus where the University owned some apartment buildings and the vast majority of off-campus students lived.  Now, the University will be adding roughly a square mile area to the south of the campus as well - from the campus south to Clayton Road and also to Big Bend.
