(KMOV)-- Police are investigating after a student was stabbed at a Metro East high school.
It happened around noon by the gym at Granite City High School, which is a separate building from the school complex.
Authorities say an altercation took place between two male students, 17 and 18 years old. During the fight, the 18 year old pulled out a knife and stabbed the 17 year old in the abdomen area. The victim was taken to St. Louis University Hospital. He was stable and talking when he left the scene. No word on his condition.
The suspect and weapon is in custody. Police are questioning the suspect and witnesses at this time. Those who know the students involved said the teens were fighting over a girl.The school sent out a text to parents telling them about the situation. The school is not on lock down.
