Home invasion suspect in critical condition after being shot by homeowner

ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – A suspect is listed in critical condition after being shot by a homeowner during a home invasion attempt in north St. Louis early Thursday morning.
Police say a 26-year-old man was found with a gunshot wound to the face behind a home in the 1600 block of block of Helen around 1:45 a.m.
The 31-year-old homeowner told police he heard kicking at the back door, looked out the window and saw the man kicking at the door. The homeowner says he retrieved a firearm and fired shots at the back door from inside the home.
When the homeowner heard the kicking stop, he told a female resident to hide his firearm.
Authorities say they found the firearm that was used by the homeowner and a firearm used the 26-year-old on the back porch of the home.
Police say the homeowner was taken into custody.
The 26-year-old man was rushed to the hospital in critical, but stable condition.
The homeowner is a convicted felon, on probation, and was not lawfully in possession of a firearm.
