(CNN) -- A man pulled out a knife on a bus, leading to a melee that ended with a trooper shooting him dead.
The incident took place Tuesday night on Interstate 95 in Norwalk, Connecticut. For reasons still unknown, a man brandished a knife on a tour bus, Connecticut State Police Lt. Paul Vance said.
Another passenger tried to take the knife away from the man, and the two got into an altercation. The bus driver spotted a state trooper along the highway and flagged the trooper down.
As the driver stopped the bus, the suspect and the passenger involved in the altercation tumbled off the bus and onto the roadway, Vance said.
As the trooper approached the bus, the suspect lunged toward the trooper with the knife, Vance said. The trooper then opened fire on the suspect, who later died at a hospital.
The tour bus was headed from New York to a casino in Connecticut.
Three passengers, including the one involved in the altercation, suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, Vance said.
The trooper was not injured.
