ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – Police say of the two women shot near Lafayette Square Sunday night, one of the victims is pregnant.

According to authorities, the shooting happened around 7:45 p.m. in the 2600 block of Rutger.

The pregnant victim was rushed urgently to a local hospital. The second victim sustained minor injuries and was also taken to a local hospital.

The victims told police they were inside their apartment when they heard gunshots and were struck by gunfire.

Both hospitalized women are listed in stable condition, according to police.

Witnesses said gunfire hit four other apartments. According to witnesses, one bullet narrowly missed a 64-year-old woman and hit a microwave in her kitchen.

Witnesses described the incident as a terrifying gun battle. They say a 4-door SUV was fleeing the scene following the shooting.

Authorities say four nearby houses sustained damage from the gunshots.

The investigation is ongoing.
