COLLINSVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) – Illinois State Troopers will be looking for anyone not wearing a seat belt throughout the month of October.
It is an Illinois law that everyone in a car must wear a seat belt, anyone found to be caught not wearing one will be issued a $60 ticket.
While troopers will be specifically looking for seat belt violators, they will always be looking for people on their cell phones.
“Put the cell phones down. We’re well aware that a lot of drivers are still driving with their phones up to their ear or holding them in their hand,” Illinois State Trooper Calvin Dye said. “In the state of Illinois, you have to be completely hands free so we’re still trying to target that and cut down on that.”
The increased patrol is specifically for Madison and St. Clair Counties.
A total of 114 fewer people have died on Illinois roads when compared to this time last year.
