ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) -- A former CIA officer has been indicted on charges that he leaked classified secrets to journalists.

A federal grand jury in Alexandria, Va., on Thursday returned a five-count indictment against John Kiriakou, who was arrested in January.

The indictment charges Kiriakou with leaking the identity of a covert CIA officer.

It also accuses him of disclosing the name and contact information of an officer who worked with him on the capture of suspected al-Qaida financier Abu Zubaydah in the months after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

He is charged with making false statements and with violating the Intelligence Identities Protection Act and the Espionage Act.

He is scheduled to be arraigned April 13.

Robert Trout, one of Kiriakou's lawyers, declined to comment Thursday.
