Man charged with burglarizing Metro East church

ALTON, Illinois (KMOV.com) – An East Alton man is accused of breaking into and stealing at least one item from a local church over the weekend.

Jeffrey A Priesmeyer was taken into custody on Tuesday and charged with felony burglary.

According to police, officer were called Sunday to the Greater Alton Church in the 500 block of East Airline Drive after a church administrator said items in the church had been damaged.

The administrator told police someone broke in to the church overnight, discharged several fire extinguishers, poured fabric softener on the floors and busted two coffee thermoses. Additionally, hundreds of chairs in the auditorium were covered with the chemicals from the fire extinguishers.

Authorities said an investigation led them to Priesmeyer, who lived in the area. Police searched his home and found evidence linking him to the break-in.

Police said they discovered Priesmeyer also stole at least one item from the church.

Priesmeyer is currently at the Madison County Jail on a $40,000 bond.
