Copper thieves photographed stealing copper from abandoned house

ST. LOUIS (KMOV) – Police are investigating after a neighbor near an abandoned north St. Louis building witnessed thieves hauling copper pipes from it early Tuesday morning.

The neighbor snapped images of the thieves stealing from the building on North Grand and wrote down the license plate number of their vehicle, but said police did not initially want the evidence to investigate.

Authorities tell News 4 that there was a miscommunication with the neighbor and are currently investigating the incident.

Thieves often target abandoned buildings for its copper and electrical wiring to sell as scrap.

“There is over $500 million worth of development going on in the 3rd Ward now,” Alderman Freeman Bosley, Sr. said.  “When people damage these buildings they go in and do fifteen to twenty thousand dollars damage and get maybe $35 of wire or copper out of it.  That really concerns me.”
