WELLSTON, Missouri (KMOV) -- A 20-year-old man is in custody after he was shot by a Wellston police officer during an altercation Tuesday morning.

Warrants have been issued to Eric Porter, Jr., for an assault on a law enforcement officer.

Police said officers responded to a call of a suspicious vehicle parked in front of a business in the 6100 block of Minerva around 6:40 a.m.

Officers arrived to the scene and asked Porter to get out of vehicle, but he refused.

Police said Porter then put the vehicle in gear and accelerated towards one of the officers. Authorities said the officer fired one shot and struck Porter.

He was taken to a nearby hospital and remains in stable condition.

No officers were injured.

Porter is currently being held on a $20,000 bond.
