Man shot, killed by officers in north St. Louis

( -- A man was shot and killed after he led police on two chases before opening fire on officers in north St. Louis Thursday night.

The shooting happened around 10:30 p.m. outside the Friendly Village Apartments in the 5500 block of Wells Avenue.

According to authorities, the officers tried to stop the suspect on a traffic offense, but he would not pull over.  The suspect eventually stopped, then jumped out of his car and took off on foot.  Pursuing officers gave chase.

Police said during the foot chase the suspect fired shots at the pursuing officers, who then returned fire, hitting the suspect. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have not reported what the initial stop was for or why the suspect was running.

Authorities recovered the suspect's weapon from the scene.

The suspect was later identified as Edward Irons, 34, from the 6400 block of Evergreen in Berkley, Missouri.
