(BaseballStL) -- Technically they haven't announced Matt Carpenter as part of the active 25-man roster for the start of the regular season... but when asked today what he'd like to see from the youngster for the rest of spring training, Mike Matheny said what he's seen so far is good enough for him. Basically, just do that for the next few days. That's essentially code for "he's on".
That's no real surprise. Carpenter brings versatility to all 4 corner spots (1B, 3B, LF, RF) and has shown some increased power. Before, he sprayed the ball for singles and took a bunch of walks.
Now, he's still getting walks but he's driving the ball to gaps for doubles.
Carpenter has done a phenomenal job and deserves to be a big leaguer. Also because, let's face it, the man has nothing left to prove at the minor league level.
