ST LOUIS (KMOV) -- The seats are empty, the score board is off and the glass around the ice at Scottrade Center is coming down as crews ready the building for basketball.

The American Cancer Society’s Coaches vs. Cancer high school basketball shootout is Thursday, but organizers fear the arena could remain empty thanks to mother nature.

“This event this year is supposed to raise about $100,000 but with the weather it’s affected ticket sales,” said organizer Jason McClelland.

The winter storm cancelled school for many of the teams involved—who in turn haven’t been able to sell tickets to students and fans.

“We’re pleading to the public, we’re pleading to the students. You can still get your tickets if you’re a school participating. At your school office and the day of the event at Scottrade Center,” added McClelland.

And what an event it will be. Some of the finest area high school teams are playing. Among them is nationally-ranked Incarnate Word, which will play Colorado’s Regis Jesuit. CBC High School will take on Kentucky power Ballard High School.

Organizers hope fans won’t let mother nature stop them from a day of great hoops and helping raise money and awareness for a worthy cause.

“We always say cancer never stops because of the weather. Patients have to go to their treatments. They have to get out there to their doctors. Why shouldn’t have to stop because of mother nature,” said McClelland.
