Authorities were battling a fire that broke out inside a car near downtown St. Louis on Tuesday.

What appeared to be red Pontiac Grand-Am caught fire on the ramp at northbound Interstate 55 onto Memorial  Dr. around 7:40 a.m.

It was not known if anyone was inside the vehicle when the fire started.

Traffic was severely backed up on I-55 as crews worked to clear the scene.
