(KMOV.com) – With extremely harsh temperatures and winter conditions coming over the next few days, there are various groups offering assistance to those having trouble staying warm.

Local non-profit Heat-Up St. Louis is offering heating bill assistance to St. Louis senior citizens, disabled people and low-income families. The all volunteer non-profit operates on donations to help pay the heating bills for those who cannot afford to keep their heat on throughout the winter. For more information call 314-241-7668.

The United Way of Greater St. Louis also sponsors numerous warming centers around the area. For more information on warming shelters, dial 2-1-1 from your phone.

Additionally, Operation SPOT sponsors a “Free Straw for Warm Paws” program. This program helps provide shelter and care for companion animals during extreme conditions. The program provides free straw at the Animal Care and Control shelter to build bedding and shelter. Pet owners who leave their animals in the cold, may be prosecuted for animal cruelty and have their animals confiscated. For more information call 314-657-1500.
