ST. LOUIS -- St. Louis Community College is changing how it calculates tuition to lower rates for students in the U.S. illegally who have a Missouri high school diploma.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that when classes at St. Louis Community College begin in January, tuition rates for students’ in the U.S. illegally will be based on where they live. Prices will range from $98 per credit hour within the college’s jurisdiction, $144 per credit hour for other state residents and $209 for international students, the rate at which they were previously charged.

While several other states offer similar benefits, the move by St. Louis Community College may be a first in Missouri.

Joanie Friend, the school’s director of enrollment management, says the school has been tracking the issue for years.
