(KMOV.com) – Starting Jan. 1, those who purchase pets at stores in Illinois will have a 3-week guarantee if the puppy is unhealthy.

Gov. Quinn signed the so-called “puppy lemon law” in August to protect buyers if their animal dies within 3-weeks of purchase.

The legislation will allow buyers to be reimbursed from pet stores for vet fees. The buyer will also be given the option of receiving a replacement pet or a full refund.

The new law also allows owners to be able to return their pet if a hereditary condition shows up within a year after purchase.

This law is only good for pet stores, not through breeders.
