SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) -- A teenage baseball player says he is holding up well in his Caribbean homeland after losing a $3.1 million contract with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Wagner Mateo, a 16-year-old Dominican prospect, was dropped Tuesday by the Cardinals over what the club called "pre-existing injuries and physical defects."
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that the left-handed hitting outfielder had vision problems that could jeopardize his career.
In Thursday's El Caribe, Mateo said, "I can only say to you that I am doing good."
The teenager's agent, Edgar Mercedes, said Mateo has myopia in his right eye and 20/30 vision, but told the Dominican newspaper that it has not negatively affected his batting.
