State looks to put clamps on stalkers

The charge of stalking is expected to become a whole lot easier to prosecute in the state of Illinois following the passage of two recent bills - one which redefines the term and another which makes it easier to seek orders of protection.

The first measure, listed as House Bill 2542, goes into effect in 2010 and broadens the definition of stalking by criminalizing any behavior which clearly causes a person to experience fear or emotional distress, apart from any personal contact.

Previous law required the threat of bodily harm and proof of two separate incidents.
