BETHALTO - Authorities are warning the public to be alert to a scam in which callers are promising hundreds of thousands of dollars in contest winnings in exchange for a token payment.
Two older women in Bethalto contacted police in the last month, saying that callers have told them they had won a $500,000 Publisher's Clearing House award. To secure the money, and to pay for taxes, the women were told they would have to send $500 by wire, said Detective Sgt. Craig Welch of the Bethalto Police Department.
"It's a play off the Nigerian schemes and other 'phishing' scams," Welch said. "People just need to be vigilant."
