It happened around 4:00 a.m. on Wednesday in the 3900 block of Max Weich in an unincorporated part of north St. Louis County near Florissant.

The victim has been identified as Orlanda Smith, 23.

A family member tells News 4 that Smith's mother was in the garage at the home getting ready to leave for work when three suspects approached her and asked to speak to her son. Smith's mother tried to say Smith wasn't there, but the suspects didn't buy it. She eventually gave in and brought them into the house. Two of the suspects followed Smith's mother into the basement to Smith's room and another suspect, who was reportedly wearing a ski mask and carrying an AK47, stayed upstairs and ransacked the house.

By that time there was a heated confrontation downstairs. Smith's mother knocked on the door, but her son didn't answer. She did again and Smith called out asking if someone else was out there with her and she said yeah.

The suspects yelled then burst into the room and shot and killed Smith. Smith's mother ran upstairs to call 911.

Smith's girlfriend was inside at the time of the shooting and was reportedly hiding under a matress when the suspects came in.

Smith's mother and girlfriend were not injured in the incident.

Police were searching for the suspects early Wednesday in north St. Louis County. Officers were searching a wooded area and stopping cars near the site of the crime. They say the suspects are considered armed and dangerous.

St. Philippine Duchesne Catholic School in Florissant was placed on lock-down as police continued to search for the gunment.

It's unclear what led to Smith's death, but we do know he stopped by Knockout Tuesday night before heading to the east side.

The question now is, is the gunman someone he meet Tuesday or someone from his past

Police do not have a good description of the masked men but say they ran away on foot.

If you have any information you're asked to call Crimestoppers 866-371-TIPS (8477).
