It was a safe holiday weekend in the city despite a high the number of citations issued by the Edwardsville Police Department.
The city's extra traffic patrols surrounding the holiday weekend grossed about 380 traffic violations including 19 driving under the influence (DUI) citations.
Lt. Scott Evers said the police department conducted its eighth series of traffic enforcement periods through Labor Day weekend and two weeks preceding (Aug. 21 through Sept. 7).
"This last special enforcement period was our largest amount of DUI arrests we have had in any one enforcement period," Evers said. "I think it shows that this is still a serious problem that we need to continue to work on. Although we had no serious accidents or fatalities, several of these DUI arrests were the result of accidents. Fortunately none of them injured any innocent people this time."
