Frustrated Illinois congressman downplays leaving Obama speech

COLLINSVILLE, Ill. (AP) -- A spokesman for a Republican congressman from southwestern Illinois says the lawmaker walked out on President Barack Obama's health-care speech to Congress this week out of frustration.

Congressman John Shimkus of Collinsville was photographed leaving Obama's Wednesday night address just minutes before the president finished.

Shimkus went on to criticize Obama's health reform plan as a government-run health insurance system that could drive private health insurers out of business.

Shimkus spokesman Steve Tomaszewski says the six-term congressman bailed on Obama's speech after hearing the president repeat what Tomaszewski called "an accumulation of rehashed talking points."
