South Grand Street changes testing this month

(KMOV)-- New lane restrictions are in place on South Grand from Arsenal to Utah in south St. Louis.

?

It's part of a proposed project funded by federal stimulus money.

?

The city wants to find out if reducing the number of lanes and widening sidewalks will work.

?

This is a trial run before construction actually begins.

???????????

The East-West Gateway Council is drawing up plans to make South Grand more pedestrian friendly and reduce the number of accidents using $2.6 million in stimulus money as a down payment.

?

Crews reduced the number of lanes from 4 to 2 traffic lanes with a center turn lane, changed the timing on traffic signals and added concrete barriers at intersections to simulate wider curbs.

???????????

For the next 30 days, there will be studies on how traffic and pedestrians would move if the changes became permanent.

???????????

This is one of three concepts for this part of Grand being considered.

???????????

There have been a lot of opinions on this. The council has set up a hotline asking for your input.
