(KMOV) -- Illinois Governor Pat Quinn is pushing for a new tax on cigarettes.
He's promising, though, to delay his efforts to raise the state income tax until next year.
The governor says he'll ask lawmakers to increase the tax on a pack of cigarettes by $1.00.
The money raised would go towards scholarships for 200,000 college students in need.
Illinois smokers currently pay $0.98 a pack in state taxes, though city and county taxes add even more.
