ST. LOUIS (KMOV) – The Cathedral Basilica in the Central West End is one of the most beautiful churches in the United States, according to a list of most stunning churches in the country put together by Budgettravel.com.
While St. Louis’s own Cathedral-Basilica isn’t as old or big as some that made the list, Budget Travel praised the building’s Byzantine and Romanesque style as reasons it made the cut.
“Not even a devastating tornado could stop the determined Archbishops of St. Louis, Missouri, from raising the $1 million needed to construct the Byzantine and Romanesque style Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis in the early 1900s,” the article read.
Built in 1908, the cathedral replaced the previous Cathedral of St. Louis, which was located along the Mississippi River.
The church is most well known for its mosaic paintings coating the entire roof.
Other churches that made Budget Travel’s list is The Cathedral-Basilica of St. Louis King of France in New Orleans, Minnesota’s Cathedral of St. Paul and the Thorncrown Chapel in the heart of the Ozark Mountains.
