Chris Carpenter runs into snag in rehab

(BaseballStL) -- After making two rehab starts, Chris Carpenter will hold off before making another.

Carpenter spoke to the media prior to the start of the series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies with the grim news: the numbness in his hand has returned, in particular during a disappointing rehab start at Memphis this weekend.

The former Cy Young winner was shellacked for 3.1 innings for the Triple-A Redbirds while he allowed four runs on nine hits and two walks on Saturday. He threw 74 total pitches. This came after allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks over 2.2 innings for the Double-A Springfield Cardinals on July 15.

His next move will be to visit the doctors, according to Brendan Meyer of STLToday.com. That visit will take place Tuesday night.
