(KMOV) – The Missouri Department of Transportation is setting up display signs along a dangerous stretch of Interstate 70 in hopes of reducing the number of crashes.
MoDOT officials says more than 150 crashes occur each month on the interstate from St.Charles County to downtown St. Louis.
The agency says the majority of those crashes are rear-end accidents caused by drivers hitting slowed or stopped traffic.
“I want to see that crash rate go down,” said Tom Blair with MoDOT. “I want our customers and motorists an opportunity to be more informed about slow traffic in front of them so they can adjust their speeds and drive accordingly.”
Electronic messaging signs used to inform drivers on travel times will now feature speed reduction advisories on the lower portion of the sign.
If the project is successful, Interstate 270 could be the next highway to see the signs put in place.
