NORTH CITY (KMOV) -- St. Louis police are trying to determine whether a deadly crash on Interstate 70 happened because the driver was fleeing from an area where shots were fired.
A 911 caller reported that shots were fired between two vehicles near a gas station on Goodfellow and Natural Bridge around 3 a.m.
One of the vehicles involved attempted to evade the gunshots and headed toward the Interstate 70 entrance ramp at Goodfellow.
Witnesses reported that the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed, went airborne, and hit a guardrail as it attempted to enter the highway.
At least one person was ejected from the vehicle and thrown onto the highway upon impact. One occupant was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two passengers were transported to the hospital, one of them in critical condition.
An assault rifle was recovered on the highway near the victim.
A small portion of eastbound I-70 was shut down until 8:20 a.m. while accident reconstruction crews were are on the scene.
Police are actively searching for the other vehicle involved in the crash.
