Local soldier's vehicle used in rolling gun battle, wreck in north St. Louis

(KMOV) – A local soldier stationed in Maryland fell victim to thieves who used his vehicle in a rolling gun battle that ended in a collision in north St. Louis Tuesday.

Roger Hunt saw his 22-year-old son’s vehicle on the news Tuesday night wrecked and riddled with bullet holes.

His son came home to St. Louis last month for a visit but left his 2010 Chevrolet Camaro when he returned to his base in Annapolis.

That vehicle with four suspects inside was involved in a shootout along Broadway shortly after 7 p.m.

The suspects exchanged gunfire with an unknown amount of suspect s in a Ford Fusion while driving at a high-rate of speed.

Witnesses say they heard 15-20 gunshots during the shootout.

The gun battle came to a halt when the suspects lost control and crashed the Camaro at the Switzer Road intersection.

The suspects in the wrecked car fled the scene before authorities arrived. It is unknown who was in the Ford Fusion of if they were injured in the gun battle.

News 4 learned the soldier had a registered gun and some ammunition inside his vehicle at the time of the theft.

On Wednesday police beefed up patrols putting extra officers on the street where this happened.

Residents say crime in the area of Broadway and Switzer keeps getting worse. “I was walking with a friend of mine when someone walked up to her and snatched her cell phone,” says Jakki Williams.

St. Louis city police insist overall crime and violent crime is down statistically. Regardless, residents want these 4 suspects caught.
