Collinsville, IL (KMOV.com) – Police in Collinsville say they have their man in the investigation into a brazen burglary attempt at the local Walmart.

Jelani Johnson, 29, of the 100 block of Knollhaven in O’Fallon, Illinois has been charged with two counts of burglary. The alleged incident happened around 3:30 a.m. Monday at the Walmart at Collinsville Crossing.

Investigators say Johnson climbed onto the roof of the store, opened a hatch and then tried to cut through the ceiling of the store’s money room. Employees heard noises coming from the ceiling and called police. Authorities surrounded the store but did not catch the burglar.

Police say photos of the suspect taken by store security cameras led to Johnson’s arrest. Now detectives are trying to determine if Johnson could be responsible for similar incidents in O’Fallon, Belleville and Litchfield, Illinois.

Johnson is being held at the Collinsville Police Department on $80,000 bond.
