(KMOV) -- A suspected drunk driver died after spending days clinging to life after a traffic stop with Hazelwood police.

Antonio Johnson, 40, according to his family, died on Thursday after being on life support and in kidney failure in a local hospital.

Hazelwood Police tell News 4 that Johnson was hit with a taser twice after becoming combative with officers along the 4600 block of Aubochon around 9 p.m. Tuesday night.

Police say Johnson was stopped for driving on the wrong side of the road and then struggled with an officer during the traffic stop.  The officer did suffer minor injuries in the scuffle but was treated at the scene.

Johnson’s wife however believes her husband’s injuries are far too serious to come from just a taser.

“I honestly believe the police beat him and dragged him on the ground, I was on the phone with him before he hung up they were telling him to turn over," said Latasha Johnson. "The scrape on his arm and face looked like he was dragged and they were hitting on him.”

Police say Johnson was awake and conscious when he was taken away in an ambulance from the scene of the traffic stop. His condition reportedly deteriorated en route to the hospital.

According to court documents, Johnson was driving with a revoked license at the time of the traffic stop and has several reports of driving under the influence on his record.

A captain with the Hazelwood Police Department says in light of Johnson’s condition, the department plans to conduct an extensive investigation into what happened during the arrest.
